Baud Rate vs. Distance

Higher baud rates require shorter cable lengths. As a rule of thumb, the maximum reliable length (in meters) can be estimated as 12,000,000 divided by the baud rate.

Cable Considerations

  • Shielded cables provide better noise immunity
  • Proper grounding of shields is essential
  • CAT5e/CAT6 can be used for most protocols but with some limitations
  • Always follow manufacturer's recommendations for specific protocols

EMI Considerations

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) can significantly reduce maximum cable length and signal quality. In high EMI environments, use shielded cables and consider reducing the calculated maximum length by 25-50%.
